How will artificial intelligence influence the recruiting landscape? Nico Bullhorn interview

Perfection is achieved when you can’t remove anything else, not when you can’t add stuff on top of it.

Steve: How will artificial intelligence influence the recruiting landscape?

Nico: It’s already influencing it. “The robots are there to take our jobs,”… I don’t know about that. I think there’s some clearly identified job-types where a lot of could be added. It’s very black and white, it’s very easy to see how eventually artificial intelligence will be able to take over these.

Steve: Is AI a slow burner trend?

Nico: You could call it that, if you look at companies like Actonomy, Textkernel, Daxtra, that have been improving semantic search and the artificial intelligence aspect to what they do. You could say it’s a slow burner, because they’ve been around for a very long time.

It’s about bandwidth and capacity; the fact that servers and data centers are now able to deal with so much data so quickly means that this technology is probably coming of age.

The infrastructure is around now to support it. In the past, the concepts were interesting but the experience wasn’t great because it was slow, clunky, or very costly due to storage. Now you can really focus on the experience and make sure that it’s quick, easy to use, and brings value straightaway.

At Bullhorn we have this philosophy that everything should be easy to use. That you can go pretty much anywhere in our product within two clicks. It’s a big, big challenge. I like to challenge my partners with this whenever they try to build integration into our systems: “Can you do it in less clicks?” Because perfection is achieved when you can’t remove anything else, not when you can’t add stuff on top of it.

The adoption levels grow quickly, and we’re looking at automation the same way. It’s about taking away the burden of repetition, like with automatic data capture, where all the emails going in and out of your system are being captured automatically into Bullhorn. All of these little things add up to improve your efficiency and allow you to focus more on what humans can do and robots can’t: building up relationships and leveraging those relationships on a daily basis.
